NORWICH – Courage, character and commitment. These are heavy words that are often tossed around at retirement parties, meant to honor a life and a long period of service one may have given to a job, a cause, a family or to the lives of others. When such words are applied to children at the young ages of 11 and 12, by people who demonstrate and appreciate the importance of being a positive influence for a living, it is in any event exceptional.

Alexa Tefft, 12 and Gabrielle Blenis, 11, both sixth graders at Perry Browne Elementary School in Norwich, were awarded Tuesday the “Triple C Award,” which is issued by state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer to students who exemplify commitment, courage and character in doing what is best for themselves, their families, their peers and their communities.

Sixth grade teachers Jamie Dowdall and Cheryl Welch presented the awards after first sending in essays on behalf of the two students, who they felt were worthy above all others to receive this distinction.
