City names new alderman, temporary fire chief

NORWICH – The shuffle within the city government is settled for now, and officials say they don’t expect any delays in their “team effort” to move Norwich forward.

Late action was taken at a Common Council meeting Tuesday night appointing City of Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino as the temporary replacement for Fire Chief John Tighe, who announced his resignation effective July 31.

“When we decided on a fire chief, we needed someone who knew what was going on,” said Mayor Joseph Maiurano. “Joe will continue the work of the great fire department John Tighe has run.”

Human Resources Director Deborah DeForest said Angelino is expected to hold the position for three to six months.

“This is an administrative position,” Angelino said. “It’s something that I really didn’t want to do, but the city council felt they needed someone to be in charge of the administration of the department.”

The Fifth Ward Alderman spot left vacant by Maiurano, who took over the office after the untimely death of Mayor Robert Raphael, was given to Sheldon Street resident Paul Laughlin. Laughlin gained majority approval with thumbs up from Sixth Ward Alderman Robert Jeffrey, Fourth Ward Alderman Walter Schermerhorn, and Second Ward Alderman Terry Bresina.

“Paul always gives me something I need to be working on,” said Maiurano. “He’s concerned about the ward, and I think he’d make a good working member of the team.”
