NORWICH – The early September deadline for FEMA and New York State aid has been extended. Registrations for assistance due to the late June flooding will now be accepted until Oct. 2.
“The decison to extend the federal deadline was made to ensure that all those affected by this disaster have had every opportunity to apply for assistance,” said Marianne C. Jackson, federal coordinating officer for FEMA.
To date, more than 1,200 Chenango County residents have registered with FEMA, and ten times that number have registered throughout the flood damaged area. New York State is offering individual and family grants of up to $5,000, for anything that FEMA does not cover, but only people who are registered with FEMA and New York State will be eligible.
City Emergency Management Officer A. Jones spoke of the registering process Friday. Two calls need to be made: To register with FEMA, you can either call 1-800-621-FEMA(3362) or register online at www.fema.gov. Then you need to register for the state grant by calling 1-877-7-NYS-AID(1-877-769-7243).
