Oxford 33, Deposit 6
DEPOSIT – Opportunistic defense and special teams gave Oxford more than enough points against Deposit Saturday afternoon in a contest that was up for grabs until the final quarter.
The Blackhawks scored two defensive touchdowns and blocked a punt that scored more points. “We were really happy with the play of the defense,” said Oxford coach John Curtis, whose club did not allow an offensive touchdown and held the Lumberjacks (2-2) to 114 yards of total offense. “This was a big division win. A loss and we would have started 0-2 in the division.”
Deposit closed to within 7-6 scoring on the opening kickoff of the second half. Tyler Vandermark returned the boot 88 yards to set the stage for a series of defensive/special teams points.
Following a defensive stop of Oxford, Deposit fumbled the ensuing punt, and Jeff Champlin returned it 35 yards to put Oxford in front 14-6. Early in the fourth, John Witchella returned an interception 35 yards for a score, and Dustin Christophersen blocked a punt in the end zone, and Kyle Smith recovered it adding points to the ledger. Scott Shackleton capped his 113-yard rushing day scoring on a 46-yard run. In the first quarter, Shackleton hauled in Steve Locke’s three-yard score for the early advantage.
Oxford (1-1, 2-2) plays at Newfield (1-0, 3-1) Saturday.
