SHERBURNE – Canastota’s girls placed five girls among the top nine, and Sauquoit Valley was a narrow winner by one point on the boys’ side over Whitesboro at the Sherburne-Earlville Invitational Saturday morning.
Among the 68-boy field, S-E senior Mitch Boise finished second overall with a time of 17:11. Boise evened the score with rival Jordan Sirtoli of Mt. Markham, who beat Boise by nearly a minute earlier in the week at Oriskany, but was 15 seconds behind Boise on this day. Jake von Mechow had the next-best S-E finish timing 19:31 to wind up 29th. “There was a nice mix of large and small schools, and schools from both Section IV and Section III,” said S-E coach Anne Geary. “It was a great opportunity for our runners to see that big pack. There was also a lot of mud and standing water in some parts of the course, so it had that old cross country feel.”
Among the S-E girls, Jasmine Huff was 25th out of 56 runners timing a 24:13 in her first big varsity invitational. “We have had some injuries on the girls’ side, but they are starting to come out of that,” Geary said. “Overall, I was impressed with the times, and they are on track to perform well at our league championships.”
