Pat Grasso Tournament Final
G-MU 36, Morris 34 (OT)
LAURENS – G-MU proved that it can play well in the absence of its leading scorer just two games into the season.
The Raiders were without top point person, Dani Conway, who fouled out late in the fourth, and were also without senior starter Terra Moore, who also fouled out in regulation.
In their stead, Kayla Armstrong sunk a 15-footer in OT – her first varsity basket, and Brittney Peet banked in a shot with a minute left to secure the Pat Grasso title. “This certainly was a big confidence boost for the rest of the kids,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “They found out they can play well with Dani in the lineup, but also can do it without her.”
Conway scored 21 points in the victory and had 39 for the two-day tournament to earn all-tourney recognition.
Bobbi-Jean Bryden pumped in 21 markers for the Mustangs scoring nine in the fourth quarter to key an eight-point comeback and force extra minutes.
G-MU rolled to a 53-23 win on Friday over host Laurens. Aside from Conway’s 18 points, all-tournament pick Brittney Rudnitsky poured in 10 markers.
