Marcellus 72, Sherburne-Earlville 34

SYRACUSE – Sherburne-Earlville’s unbeaten dream season, one in which it strung together 21 straight wins, came to a sudden end against high-powered Marcellus Saturday evening at Manley Field House.

The Mustangs scored 46 points in the second half; more than S-E’s season-long game allowance, and turned a 15-point third-quarter lead into a blowout outscoring the Marauders 27-4 in the final period.

“Wilson (Rose) was on the bench with four fouls at the end of the third quarter, and I put him back in to start the fourth because I thought it gave us the best chance to come back,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “He fouled out in the first minute of the fourth quarter.”

The Marauders were within six points early in the third quarter before back-to-back three balls by the Mustangs moved the lead into double digits for keeps. It was Marcellus’ 14th win in 15 games as they move on in the Section III Class B tournament.

“They were bigger than us at every position, and pretty much quicker than us at every position,” Vibbard said. “I wouldn’t say they are 38 points better than us, but they are definitely the best team we’ve seen all season. They are an extremely good basketball team.”
