Sabers chip away for win over Norwich

Baseball

Sus Valley 5, Norwich 1

NORWICH – Sus Valley chipped away at Norwich scoring in four of the first five innings to hand the Tornado their fourth straight defeat on Friday.

Mike Chantry was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and the Sabers scored two insurance runs in the fifth on an outfield error. “I’m so proud of the way we played through the vacation,” said Norwich coach John Martinson, who had seven starters out of the lineup the past two games due to spring break vacation. “Normally, in a game like this we would get smacked around. We’re playing better baseball and making fewer errors.”

Patrick Coates scored Mike Moon with an RBI single in the first that tied the game at one apiece. Norwich (1-4) plays at Chenango Valley Wednesday.

DEPOSIT – A day removed from a win where it manufactured runs from few offensive opportunities, Greene busted out the hitting sticks in a rout of Deposit Friday afternoon.

The Trojans won their fourth straight game with seven extra-base hits – six of those triples. “We were patient at the plate and worked the count,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “How can you complain when you have seven extra-base hits?”
