Greene needs overtime to advance

Field Hockey

Greene 2, Vestal 1 (2 OT)

GREENE – Domination on the field doesn’t necessarily reflect on the scoreboard. The Trojans, in spite of a hefty advantage in shots on goal, needed a second-overtime goal to get past pesky Vestal and advance to the Class A sectional finals.

“The girls stayed composed, and you just hope it’s a matter of time before we get one,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “And we did.”

The Trojans earned a pair of shutout wins over Vestal in the regular season, and allowed just one shot through 74 minutes of play Tuesday. Still, it took Erin Smith’s goal with six minutes left in double-OT to provide the margin of victory. Anna Crumb sent in a free hit from 10 yards outside of the penalty circle, and that was redirected by Holly Davis to Smith, who made a move and smoked the ball between the pipes.

“The last time we played, we dominated them but only got one goal,” Carlin said. “We knew they had nothing to lose, and they came out playing tough.”

Oxford’s Davis had the lone first-half goal scoring unassisted. Vestal tied the game 5:08 into the second half when, Nicole Hess converted an Amy Eiche pass into a goal.

Greene (16-2) plays Whitney Point Friday at 8 p.m. at Dick Hoover Field in Vestal for the Section IV, Class A title.
