OXFORD – Six on the Square proudly presents country blues artist, Marjorie Thompson Saturday. Marjorie is a singer/songwriter and fingerstyle guitarist from Providence, R.I. She plays and sings country blues, rags and roots style. With over 90 original songs reflective of this style, they’re also quirky, humorous and heartfelt, all born from a passion and desire to play acoustic guitar.
Marjorie Thompson has worked hard and excelled at three careers, any one of which would cause many to bow under the pressure. She is the Associate Dean of Biology at Brown University, teaching and advising students since 1983. She also has raised a big family of seven children – enough to keep anyone extremely busy. In 1999, however, Marjorie followed an inner calling and took several guitar workshops with her “idol,” Jorma Kaukonen, founder of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. Something dormant had sprung back to life; a longing to play guitar. Marjorie played guitar and got good…very good!
A lot has happened since then! Marjorie discovered her own songwriting muse in 2001, she went on tours, recorded albums and her career as a country blues artist just grew and grew. She has now recorded five albums of her songs, with the latest: Right by Me (2007). All feature original songs and accompaniment by her band partner Greg Franklin and other guest artists. Marjorie plays an average of 80 shows per year throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States, as well as European tours, events and festivals around the United States.
