OXFORD – If the photos are any indication of success, ‘trophy-sized fish just waiting to be snagged’ should be on the banner of an Oxford businessman’s newly created website.
Captain James G. Jared’s Shade Tree Charters went online in January, and the colorful photos included depict many proud anglers showing off extremely large trout, salmon, steelhead, small mouth bass and muskie. The latter fish - which can be in excess of 50 to 60 inches long - are only caught and released in order to preserve the species.
“People only keep a legal-sized muskie if it’s their personal best or a possible record,” Jared, who started his chartering business five years ago, said. “And, believe me, there’s a lot of hooping and hollering on board when that happens.”
Captain Jared is a USCG licensed and fully-insured boat pilot with 20 years of big water fishing experience. Originally from Cookeville, Tenn., he moved to Chenango County in 1969 and was an communications technician with Frontier in Norwich for 28 years. A past member of the Chenango County SPCA board, he and his wife, Cilla, live on a lively 28-acre gentleman’s farm with an ever-growing and changing menagerie of dogs and cats.
Fishing enthusiasts may charter Jared’s fully-equipped boat, The Christie II, for full day outings on Lake Ontario beginning in April and on the St. Lawrence River from October through December. The 28-foot boat has a 10 1/2 foot beam and can hold up to six people. Families are welcome.
