NORWICH – One of the city’s fire trucks has been removed from service and the department is looking at options for purchasing a new one.

At last week’s meeting of the City Finance/Personnel Committee, Fire Chief Joseph Angelino said Engine Two, a 1988 Hahn that was purchased 20 years ago, was out of service due to disrepair. He explained that Engine One is now 21 years old. The 1987 American LaFrance was recently repaired and is awaiting a pump test before being put back in service.

“The truck is stainless steel and it has value, but whether that value is to another fire department or to us as a reserve engine, I don’t know,” Angelino said.

Angelino discussed the possibility of purchasing a new vehicle for the department. Since no formal action has been taken, Angelino could not say exactly how much the truck would cost, but he estimated the truck would run between $280,000 to $300,000, due in part to new engine specifications that went into effect in 2007.
