Youth Bureau announces summer activities

NORWICH – The City of Norwich Youth Bureau has announced the schedule for summer activities. Youth Bureau programs are provided free of charge for residents in the City of Norwich and towns of Norwich, North Norwich, Plymouth, Preston and Pharsalia.

Registrants from other areas will be charged $32 for one event and $16 for each event after the first. Children missing three or more consecutive classes in some programs may be dropped because of limited enrollment space.

• Swimming lessons – Individuals aged five to 20 can participate in hour long classes starting at 9 a.m. daily. Schedule is subject to change if a minimum of five children per class is not met. There is a limit of 10 participants per class. The first session will run from June 30 until July 18. Second session will be held from July 21 to Aug. 8.

Registration for the second session will be held on July 18 at Kurt Beyer Pool.

• Guard Start – A starter course for lifeguards will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. for six weeks beginning on June 30 at the Kurt Beyer Pool. Participants must be at least 13 years old.

• Competitive Swim Team – For children eight years old and over. Practice time will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Swim meet schedule to be announced. (Swim team coaches are needed to help run this program.)

• Playground – For ages five to nine. Each site is limited to 30 children.

Site 1 – Guernsey Library, noon to 4 p.m. June 4 through Aug. 8.

Site 2 – To be determined, noon to 4 p.m. June 4 through Aug. 8.

• Soccer – A six week program, running from June 30 to Aug. 8. There will be two practice nights for each age group and groups will play each other on game nights. Sign up for only one group. Games and practices will be held at the Perry Browne Soccer Field

Program 1 – Kindergarten through first grade, 6 to 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. Games to be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday.

Program 2 – Kindergarten through first grade, 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Games to be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday.

Program 3 – Second through fourth grade, 7 to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. Games to be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Fridays.

Program 4 – Second through fourth grade, 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Games to be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Fridays.

• Tennis – Participants 8 years and up will meet at the high school tennis courts Monday through Friday. Beginners will meet from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Intermediate players will meet from 10 to 10 :45 and advanced players will meet from 11 to 11:45. June 30 to Aug. 8.

• Summer Educational and Fun Trips – The program will include bus trips to museums, zoos, state parks, beaches and amusement parks. Free transportation is provided, but in some cases a charge for admission is required. Register at the Youth Bureau Office located at City Hall, One City Plaza, East Main Street.

• Borden Avenue Skating Facility and Skateboard Park – The facility will be open all summer long. The skate park is unattended and participants are advised to skate at your won risk. Protective equipment is required.
