NORWICH – State funding intended for an environmental restoration project at the Northeast Classic Car Museum has dried up and industrial development officials are uncertain about funding for a separate project in Ward 4.

The Chenango County Industrial Development Agency IDA had been partnering with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the New York State Department of Health and an independent consultant to investigate trichloroethylene remediation solutions for the museum’s Building #4 on State Street. The structure, donated to the museum in 2006, is used for storage.

The IDA was in the process of taking title to the building in order to execute a contract for the work on their behalf. About half of the project’s estimated $93,000 cost would have been covered by a grant from Senator Tom Libous, R-Binghamton, and a 10 percent match from the IDA. The remainder would have been covered by the DEC’s Environmental Restoration Project fund.

Executive Director Maureen Carpenter said the museum could possibly access federal Environmental Protection Agency ‘Super Funds’ as an alternative. “We don’t have enough in our budget to cover it,” she said.

Northeast Classic Car Museum Director Doreen Bates said the museum would “wait and weigh our options and see what’s available for us.”
