OXFORD – An independent consultant’s study of possible uses for the soon-to-be vacant veteran’s home in Oxford has been delivered, but not yet reviewed, said a New York State Department of Health director.

“We are concentrating on building a new building, not focusing on an alternative use for the current building,” said Val Gray, who heads the DOH’s health facilities management department. Gray would not confirm that the report was actually “complete.”

“We have a contractor’s feasibility report. We are going to review it in this office and we will take whatever is in it and forward it to the appropriate people,” he said.

Local officials are eager to review the document; one they say could possibly save the building from demolition and serve as a catalyst for more jobs. Supervisor James B. Bay, D-Smyrna, requested an update on the feasibility study during a meeting of the Health and Human Services Committee July 1.

“The clock is ticking,” he said. “We are getting dangerously close. There’s money to destroy that building. It seems too good a building to be taking it down. If they sit on this feasibility study, it’ll be too late.”
