NEW BERLIN – More than 400 teenagers are expected to arrive at Unadilla Valley Central School Sunday in anticipation of summer camp. But unlike other camps that offer trail hikes and campfires, the campers attending Chenango Rivers Workcamp will be spending their days swinging hammers and applying paint as they assist homeowners with needed tasks.
Through Group Work Camps of Colorado, children from across the country sign up and pay to attend summer work camps. This is the fifth time the work camp has come to Chenango County, and following their stay, about 70 homes in and around New Berlin will be improved.
The Housing Council of Chenango County, as well as other organizations such as Opportunities for Chenango and Habitat for Humanity, have sought for months to raise money for the materials needed to allow homeowners get work done on their properties, free of charge.
