SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville Board of Education made it clear at Monday night’s meeting that they would be standing behind their high school principal while he works toward recovery.

High School Principal Keith Reed Jr., 47, Norwich, was involved in a motor vehicle accident on Friday afternoon. Reed was riding his motorcycle south on Route 12 in Oxford when he collided into the side of a pick-up truck that failed to yield the right of way.

Superintendent Gayle Hellert updated the board and the members of the public about Reed’s condition. “He’s still critical, but he’s stable,” she said. With multiple broken bones, cuts, scrapes and lacerations, Reed is expected to remain in the intensive care unit at Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City for at least a month. Reed is expected to undergo several surgeries and physical therapy.

“Keith is looking at a substantially long recovery. It could easily take the whole school year,” said Board President Doug Shattuck. “It’s important to the board and the district that the principal’s job stays here. We want [Keith] back.”
