OXFORD – Greene defeated Oxford for the third time this season getting a shutout victory in the championship game of the Blackhawks’ tournament Saturday night.
It was the third win in three days for the Trojans, who have won 11 straight games, and can wrap up their first-ever Midstate Athletic Conference division title at Delhi Tuesday.
“Going into the week, I was kind of nervous about playing three games in three days,” said Greene coach Randy Smith, who said his team was battling injuries. “We handled it well, and having McDermott (Megan) up front helps.”
Coming off a five-goal game against Norwich on Thursday, McDermott had two goals in a 2-1 win over Unatego Friday, and scored two of her team’s three goals against Oxford. Adding a goal in title win was Haley McLaren. “We lost two games in the S-E Tournament, so we wanted this one,” Smith said. “Oxford is a good team and their speed up front is scary.”
Norwich, meanwhile, secured its second third-place tournament finish this season, and both wins have come over Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton.
Sarah Bonnell scored twice, while Elisha Eddy and Miranda Costin added goals in the first half en route to a 4-0 shutout of the Raiders. Tatyana Ithier made three saves in goal for the Tornado shutout. It was the sixth win this season for Norwich to match last year’s total.
