Investigators look for clues in fatal Norwich fire

NORWICH – State and county investigators continue to examine the scene of a fatal Norwich fire where rescuers removed two other seriously injured family members from the burning trailer Sunday.

The body of Donald K. Loomis, 79, was taken from the remains of the family’s burned-out trailer in the Maple Grove Trailer Park in the Town of Norwich Sunday afternoon.

His wife, Ida M. Loomis, 80, is in critical condition and their daughter, Christine L. Loomis, 40, in serious condition at the University Hospital in Syracuse. Both are being treated for smoke inhalation and burns after being transferred from Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Crews were summoned to the family’s residence on 157 Bourbon Street, Maple Grove Trailer Park following a 911 call approximately 2:57 p.m. Sunday.

“All we knew heading out is that there was a call of three people trapped inside a house,” said Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo.

The first fire engine on the scene arrived four minutes later at 3:01 p.m. from the Norwich Fire Department .
