Ilion Tournament
ILION – Sherburne-Earlville fell just a half-point short of its third team tournament title this season, crowning three title winners at the Leo J. Sammon Tournament at Ilion Saturday.
Tyi Franklin (96), Greg DuVall (125), and Daniel Hicks (135) picked up first-place honors for the Marauders, and Hicks won his first-ever Most Outstanding Wrestler award. Hicks captured his first two matches by technical fall and majority decision, then pinned his final two foes. The four wins improved his season log to 23-3. “The coaching staff moved (Daniel) up in weight this year,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks, Daniel’s father. “He’s on a weightlifting program, and he’s just more confident this year. (This award) was a great honor for him.”
The Marauders placed 11 wrestlers including runner-up finishes from Alec Sheddon (103), Joe Knapp (145), and Jon Miller.
“At the start of the season, we thought we would be among the top three or four in most tournaments,” Hicks said. “To win two and just barely lose this one, that’s above our expectations.”
The Marauders host B-G/Afton Wednesday.
