WATERVILLE – Sherburne-Earlville’s second win over Waterville this season was not nearly as easy as the first one.
The Marauders forced overtime on Karli Harris’ fourth-quarter buzzer beater. Tied at 56 apiece after one extra period, the Marauders jumped out to a four-point lead, and Megan Record’s 3-for-4 foul shooting wrapped up the win.
“I’m proud of the way we played, and we didn’t panic,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan of the fourth quarter. “We didn’t have any timeouts, but we kept our composure, and Karli hit a big-time shot.”
Jena Young made the first of two free throws for Waterville to make it 46-44, and after missing the second freebie, Alexandra Hughes put back the miss making it 48-44 with 11 seconds left.
S-E’s Caitlynn Adams made one foul shot with six seconds left, and S-E forced a held ball with five seconds remaining after Adams missed her second attempt. “Fortunately, the possession arrow was going our way at the end,” Mulligan said. “It was an outstanding game, and both teams’ players were making great plays under pressure.”
Bridget Irwin finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. Brenda Hoefler added 12 points, and scored seven of S-E’s first nine points in the fourth quarter to help erase a five-point deficit. Adams scored 11 to go with six steals, and Harris racked up 10 points.
The Marauders host Cooperstown tonight.
