ONEONTA – Harpursville not only ended Greene’s unbeaten run through the season, but unseated the Trojans as Midstate Athletic Conference champions.

Hannah Kimmel scored 26 points and pulled down 20 rebounds for the Hornets, who rallied from 18 points down to defeat Greene at SUNY Oneonta Saturday, 55-52.

The Hornets (17-3) were 11-for-13 from the foul line in the last quarter – all from Kimmel and her cousin Alycia Kimmel – to hold off Greene.

“It’s a disappointing loss, but it doesn’t take away from the ultimate goal, which is a sectional title,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “I think the girls will come back with more determination.”

Greene opened its season with a 50-45 win over the Hornets, and in that game it was playing catch-up most of the second half.

About 2 1/2 months later, it was a case of role reversal. Greene scored the first eight points of the game until a Kimmel three ball put her team on the board.

Liz Wentlent hit two early threes for Greene, Barb Borst drained three hoops, and Megan McDermott added five points in a prolific 20-12 first quarter. The Trojans picked up steam in the second quarter starting it on a 14-4 run.

Erin Smith and Wentlent hit three balls and scored five points during the salvo upping the margin to 34-16 with 2:04 left in the half.
