Greene Tournament
Greene 5, Tioga 2 (finals)
Greene 4, Chenango Forks 1
GREENE – Greene won its home tournament for the first time defeating two-time defending champion Chenango Forks in the first game, then knocking off 2008 Section IV Class C finalist Tioga in the title game.
The Trojans never trailed in the championship game, although a two-run homer in the sixth by Tioga’s Kari Walkley drew the Tigers to within 3-2.
Greene answered back immediately. Erin Smith doubled, and winning pitcher Rebecca Hanrahan moved the margin back to three runs with a two-run round-tripper.
“It was a great experience for us to go against a top-caliber pitcher (Tioga’s Sarah Wayson),” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We didn’t stop playing when the score became close and we came through. We’re having better at-bats, we’re making contact, and our confidence as a team continues to rise.”
Greene established the early lead getting a two-run triple from Caitlin Willis in the fourth.
Hanrahan had 13 strikeouts and allowed four hits to match Tioga’s Wayson, who struck out nine and surrendered five Greene hits.
Winners of five straight, Emily Pierce was 3-for-3 with an RBI to pace Greene against Forks, and Haley MacLaren added a 2-for-3 day. Hanrahan struck out a career-high 16 and gave up three Blue Devils hits.
