Oxford Community Band continues concert series

OXFORD – The Oxford Community Band’s first Summer Concert got a wet start in LaFayette Park on Thursday, July 2. Had it been raining before the concert’s start, the band would have performed in the Oxford Academy primary/high school auditorium. In this case, however, it was dry at the start. Unfortunately, the rain wasn’t able to hold off long enough for the hour long concert. Francis Wilcox, band director, didn’t let the rain dampen their spirit, and the show did go on! The band moved their equipment into the bandstand and their dedicated audience stayed huddled under umbrellas or in cars while children splashed in the puddles. It was still a fine concert despite the weather.

For five more evening concerts, the group (of approximately twenty members, ranging in age from school students to senior citizens), will play marches, show tunes, and novelty selections for the enjoyment of the Oxford community. The Band performs Thursday evenings on the parks in Oxford. The remaining Thursday concert dates are: 7/16; 7/23; 7/30 & 8/6. The upcoming three July performances, held in LaFayette Park, are at 7:30 p.m. The last two concerts, one held at Washington Park (across from Bida Home) and the other at the Oxford Historical Society’s Depot-Museum, are both at 7 p.m.
