OXFORD – On Sunday, area kids will have the chance to trade in their Tonka-sized trucks for the real thing, as the Oxford Lions Club sponsors its first Big Rig event.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. behind Otsego Auto Crushers on Route 12 just north of the Halfway House Bridge, kids of all ages will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with more than 20 trucks and pieces of super-sized farm and construction equipment, all volunteered for the day by area businesses.

“It will be a fun day for kids,” said Oxford Lion David Emerson, who helped organize the fundraiser. According to Emerson, proceeds from the event will benefit the organization’s charitable projects, which include speech and sight programs, community support and assistance for fire victims.

Little kids are fascinated with big things, said Lion Bob Marshman, explaining the appeal of the event, which will give children the chance to climb on and in everything from a dump trucks and excavators to cement mixers and fire trucks.

The equipment will be provided by a number of local businesses including Burrell’s Excavating, Doug Moore Contracting, Chenango Truck, B & B Ready Mix, Blueox, Spencer Towing, Marshman Farm, Howe Farm, John and Bob Hoffman of Chershire Valley Farm, Weidman Farms and the Norwich and Oxford Fire Departments.
