OXFORD – On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Oxford Historical Society invites you to a special evening program at the Depot-Museum featuring ‘The Life and Career of Henry R. Mygatt and Family’. The early Mygatts had emigrated from England and made their mark in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York.
Henry R. Magatt was one of the most notable lawyers in Chenango County history, and certainly one of Oxford's most pre-eminent citizens. Still, he's not well known to locals despite his large oil portrait that hung in the Oxford Academy Middle School for years, marked “Trustee 1841-1875” and is now prominent in the local museum.
Don Howard, a life-member of the Oxford Historical Society, began researching Mygatt and he now has a fascinating story to tell – with several surprises and details of great interest for Oxonians and other Chenango residents.
