Class B Tournament
OWEGO – Norwich had an unblemished day in the first round of the Section IV, Class B Tournament Thursday afternoon.
Before inclement weather halted play, Norwich sent its two singles entries into the second round of tournament action, and its second doubles team held a commanding lead. “This is the first time we’ve had all of our participants advance in my tenure here,” said Norwich coach John Stewart, who has led the Tornado netters for over a decade.
Jessica Lerner was a decisive winner taking out Owego’s Carmina Georgescu, 6-0, 6-1. Reva Seager battled back from the brink of defeat to avenge an early-season loss to Chenango Valley’s Catharine Carter, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Seager was down 5-2 in the second set before running the final four games and 10 of the last 12 overall. “Reva lost four deuce points in the first set,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “She was the steadier performer, and things just went her way the rest of the match.”
Emily Stewart and Katie Orioli beat Windsor’s number one team of Nicole Pionteck and Sarah Freed, 6-4 in the first set, and led 2-1 in the second before play was suspended.
Norwich’s top doubles combination, Bryn Loomis and Sophie Stewart, did not play. Due to expected bad weather this weekend, the tournament will resume Tuesday morning at Owego.
