NORWICH – What classic board game helps players sharpen their spelling, vocabulary and math skills, all in the guise of a good time? Scrabble, of course.
This Saturday, Literacy Volunteers of Chenango County are once again inviting community members to “stop by for a spell” to participate in the non-profit organization’s Scrabble Challenge for Literacy fundraiser.
“I don’t call it a tournament,” said LVCC Director Terry Bickford, explaining that at least for the beginner and intermediate divisions the event is more about fun than competition. That isn’t necessarily the case for participants in the decidedly more cut-throat Advanced bracket.
The event will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Norwich Branch of Morrisville State College, 20 Conkey Ave. in Norwich. Teams of two to four players will compete in two 45-minute rounds of play, separated by a 15-minute break where contestants will engage in other word games while scorers tally up the results after the first round.
According to Bickford, it’s not too late to register. Walk-ins are always welcome, she said. Participants who sign up in advance will pay $10 per person, while those who register the day of the tournament will pay $12.
No team? No problem, Bickford will match you up with others in the division of your choice.
