GREENE – Delhi’s two-year reign on top of the Midstate Athletic Conference ended Thursday night at George Raymond Field.
Greene, unbeaten in Midstate Athletic Conference division play, finished off the regular season with the first-ever overall MAC title blanking the Bulldogs, 2-0.
The win follows up a 3-1 win over Delhi in September, Delhi’s only other defeat against a league foe. “This championship means a lot,” said Greene third-year head coach Rick Tallman. “To legitimately have an actual champion, and to win it against Delhi, who has been a top-notch team the past two years....it makes it even sweeter.”
The Trojans threatened the Delhi goal several times, but seemed to fire high and wide at every good opportunity. Just over 12 minutes into the second half, Bulldogs keeper Pat Cobane made a tough save of Ryan Ludwig’s close-range shot to keep the score tied.
On the other side of the ball, Greene sweeper Dan Moriarity headed up a stingy defense that allowed just three Delhi shots. “We made some defensive mistakes, but nothing really costly” Tallman said. “Moriarty played a phenomenal game, and the defense made adjustments when it needed to.”
