NEW BERLIN – Agro Farma, the New Berlin-based company which produces Chobani Greek-style yogurt, announced Tuesday their intention to donate $50,000 to Haiti relief efforts.
According to company officials, the donation will be divided between the American Red Cross ($30,000), UNICEF ($10,000) and Doctors Without Borders ($10,000).
“The devastation in Haiti struck all of us at Chobani and deeply impacted our local Central New York community. It is simply heart-breaking,” said Agro Farma president Hamdi Ulukaya, in a statement issued yesterday.
The Caribbean nation, which occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola, was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake shortly before 5 p.m. on Jan. 12. The quake, considered by experts to be the worst to hit the region in two centuries, took an estimated 200,000 lives, injured some 194,000 people and left approximately 1 million Haitians homeless.
