VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Binghamton University will welcome a four-time national champion wrestler this fall when Greene senior Tyler Beckwith enters the wrestling room.
Beckwith capped a perfect 2009-2010 season winning the National High School Coaches Association wrestling tournament last weekend at Virginia Beach.
Beckwith, a two-time undefeated New York State champion, won his fourth straight national championship winning six matches in the 171-pound senior division. After winning his first three preliminary matches – two by pinfall – Beckwith’s road to the title became much bumpier. He won back-to-back close decisions in the quarterfinals and semifinals, then captured the title with a 6-3 win over Isaiah Williams of Massachusetts.
Beckwith, who was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Section IV and New York State Division II State Championships, was once again named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the NHSCA tourney.
During his long career with Greene, Beckwith won four Section IV titles and placed four times at the New York State meet.
Beckwith’s younger brother, Mike, backed up his first Section IV championship placing fourth in the freshman 140-pound nationals.
Beckwith will buoy a Bearcats wrestling roster that sent multiple wrestlers to the NCAA Division I championships less that two weeks ago in Omaha, Neb., and had one all-American in Justin Lister, who was fourth at 157 pounds.
