NORWICH – Mayor Joe Maiurano, New York Susquehanna and Western Railway Corporation President Nathan Fenno and approximately a dozen family members, friends and fellow Boy Scouts were on hand Wednesday evening to witness Troop 63 Boy Scout Michael Reilly’s Eagle Scout leadership project presentation – the restoration of the Jordan Spreader which resides on the railroad tracks adjacent to Hosbach Trail.
The spreader, built circa 1900, and the area immediately surrounding it, had long been considered a blight on the landscape, and Reilly said he wanted to “clean it up so it could be available to the public once again.”
“It’s historically significant and not just a place for kids to go and party,” added Reilly. “I had been by a couple of times and noticed that it was pretty run down.”
In addition to collecting the large volume of accumulated garbage which littered the area, Reilly and fellow scouts spent hours painting the graffiti-covered spreader, boarding up the damaged interior, landscaping and spreading the four tons of stone donated by Chenango Asphalt.
