SIDNEY – B-G/Afton swept the team titles at the Midstate Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships Thursday at Sidney High School.
On the girls’ side, the Bears had 131 points to runner-up Sidney’s 91. For the boys, it was an impressive display of athletic talent and balance throughout the events as the Bears racked up 201 total points, more than 2 1/2 times the score of second-place Greene’s 71.
B-GA’s boys took the top three spots in the 1,600-meter run, the 200-meter dash, and the 3,200-meter run. Corey Burnett won the two longer races, while Mike Loitsch outdueled teammates Josh Norris and Jake Taylor timing 22.6 seconds in the 200.
On the girls’ side, eighth-grader Isamarie Ramos won the steeplechase for the Bears, grabbed the 800 meters, and had two second-place finishes to lead her club.
Oxford’s defending state champion, Katie Woodford, had her best time of the season in the 400-meter dash timing a 57.6. She also won the 100-meter dash, and teamed with her sister Emily, Amanda Marks, and Jessica Russo to win the 400-meter relay. Emily Woodford also set a season-low time in the 200-meter dash winning in 25.7. “We are very pleased with where we are, and as far as goal setting, we’re right on track,” said Oxford coach Irene DeJager. “Katie is way ahead of the pace she had last year at this time.”
