Greene 13, Bainbridge-Guilford 1
GREENE – Greene moved a step forward in the Section III, Class C tournament easing past Bainbridge-Guilford Thursday.
After two scoreless innings, Greene’s Caitlin Willis put her team on the scoreboard with a two-run double. The Trojans came back with nine more runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. “This (final result) was not what I thought it was going to be,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “I was expecting a really tough game. B-G has played well against Deposit and Afton, and I was really nervous. Tonight reminded me of playing Oxford last year.”
Greene used a combination of solid basehits and small ball to rack up seven hits – four on bunts – in the fourth. Natalie Greene’s two-run single was the biggest blow dealt by the Trojans. “Bunting is something we’ve worked really hard on, and it changed the game tonight,” Smith said. “(Bunting) is a part of the game we’ve wanted to develop, and if we can get by on Tuesday (the next playoff game), it will probably come down to those types of plays.”
Rachel Turner, who had a bunt single, finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Stephanie Stahl had three hits and three runs scored, and Willis went 2-for-5.
Rebecca Hanrahan struck out 12 and walked one for her 17th victory this season.
Greene next meets the winner of Tioga and Walton.
