Seventh-inning rally gives Saints 3-2 win over Greene

BINGHAMTON – It wouldn’t be a Greene playoff game without some sort of seventh-inning drama. The Trojans wrote happy endings to their previous two Class C sectional wins, but found themselves on the short end of a 3-2 defeat to Seton Catholic Central in Saturday’s title tilt at the BAGSAI Complex

It was the third straight one-run final for the Trojans (19-4) who were in their second straight Section IV hampionship game – both defeats. Greene coach Rick Smith was happy his team set a team-record for wins this season and won the school’s first MAC championship. Yet, his team again came up short of winning its first sectional championship. “We took two more steps this year, we’ll just have to try to get back here next year,” Smith said.

Seton Catholic Central entered the last inning down a run, and had literally done nothing the last time through the batting order against Greene pitcher Rebecca Hanrahan. Hanrahan had retired nine straight batters after giving up a lead-off single in the fourth to Jenna Matthews. Hanrahan struck out the side in the fifth against the meat of Seton’s order, and needed just nine pitches to get the next three hitters in the sixth.
