NORWICH – The Chenango County Historical Society’s Pharmacal Museum, located in the Eaton Center for over two decades, officially closed its doors on June 1, in preparation for its relocation to the CCHS Museum on Rexford Street.

Originally constructed by Procter and Gamble in the mid-80s, the exhibit represents the pharmaceutical industry in Chenango County, which has a long history in the area dating back to 1885, according to CCHS Director Alan Estus.

Although there were several factors which influenced the decision to relocate the exhibit, Estus said the primary reason was the limited visitation and minimal operating hours it had while located at the Eaton Center.

“We’re revamping and redesigning the display in an effort to increase its availability to the public,” said Estus, who announced a tentative opening date of Sept. 1 for the new exhibit. “People sometimes don’t realize the significance of P&G locally and the positive impact it had on the community, and it’s important to remember the considerable industrial base which once occupied Norwich and the surrounding communities.”
