NORWICH – Seeking its first Otsenango Pony League championship in a decade, Norwich began the playoffs with an impressive shutout win over Unadilla Valley II’s under-14 club on Thursday.
Soon-to-be Norwich freshman, Cody Barnes, pitched a no-hitter in the five-inning game that was halted under the mercy rule. Barnes had eight strikeouts and three walks.
The Norwich offense came out swinging from the outset scoring 12 runs in the opening frame on 11 hits. UV also committed four errors to aid the Norwich effort.
Reid Rose, the second batter of the game, hit a two-run homer scoring Cameron Prime. Chris Trevisani laced a two-run single, Ben Barnes, celebrating his 16th birthday, hit a two-run double, and Brenden McNerney added an RBI triple. Norwich put six more runs on the board in the third led by John Yacano’s two-run single and Robert Jeffrey’s pinch-hit RBI basehit.
