Greene 3, Whitney Point 1

GREENE – Greene proved that it not just a front-runner showing its comeback ability in a title win at the 2nd Annual Nancy Barrows, Nancy Bromley Tournament, Saturday against Whitney Point.

The Golden Eagles led 1-0 at the half on the strength of a goal early in the game by Paige Monsen. “Our kids did not seem rattled by the goal, and that was good,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “We weren’t back on our heels in the first half, but we weren’t as aggressive.”

The Trojans’ level of play raised significantly in the second half. Jahna Driscoll scored the tying goal nine minutes into the second half after Andrea Day’s pass. Day brought the ball down the field and into the middle before dumping the ball to Driscoll. Driscoll tallied the go-ahead goal – her 29th this season – on a penalty corner pass from Emily Conroe with 12:36 remaining. Just over a minute later, Emily Gascon added an insurance goal.

“Whitney Point has been kind of like us, and their goalie hasn’t been tested as much,” Carlin said. “We made some adjustments and wanted to make sure we got some shots on goal and made their goalie play a little bit. Another key was that we outhustled them to the ball on numerous occasions, and we were winning more of the 50-50 balls.”

Devyn Staley anchored the Trojans’ defense making 10 saves as Greene improved to 13-0 on the season.
