NORWICH – The Norwich City Police Department is being assisted by the Untied States Secret Service in tracking down the source of counterfeit money after three local businesses reported they had received fake $50 bills over the weekend.
Chief Joseph Angelino said officers had so far confiscated $200 worth of counterfeit bills from a local bank, explaining police were still investigating the full scope of the incidents.
“This can sometimes be difficult to determine whether the person involved in the passing the money knows what they are doing or they may be a victim themselves,” said the chief.
Police said all of the counterfeit currency so far collected were $50 denominations and of good quality.
“Just holding one in your hand, it would be difficult to tell. If you had some real bills with you and carefully compared them, the average person would probably notice a slight difference in how they feel,” said Angelino.
