GREENE – Community members are invited to the grand opening of the new Public Computer Center from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Moore Memorial Library, 59 Genesee Street in Greene.

The center, located on the lower level of library, offers free computer training classes and workshops, as well as one-on-one tutoring.

“Right now we’re concentrating on the unemployed and the underemployed in Greene and surrounding communities,” said Jessica Jaramillo, who is one of the center’s two part-time trainers.

Jamarillo’s area of expertise is with social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and Linked-In, and skills such as resume building. Her counterpart, Pam Sousa, focuses more on basic computer skills, and the use of programs such as Word and Excel.

“Our basic goal is to ...increase digital literacy in Upstate New York,” explained the center’s director, Sandra Brocious. She explained the need for this type of effort by quoting FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, who stated, “The digital divide is an opportunity divide.”
