NORWICH – The Chenango County Historical Society will hold its annual Holiday Open House from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the CCHS Museum, located at 45 Rexford St.

At 2 p.m., the historical society will unveil its newest exterior exhibit, which features the historic Lyon Brook Bridge, according to CCHS Director Alan Estus.

Constructed in 1869 and rebuilt in 1894, the Lyon Brook Bridge and O&W Railway exhibit features an original date marker from one of the bridge’s pedestal stones, several sections of its steel girder framework and photographs and information on the historic bridge itself, said Estus.

The O&W Railway ceased operations in 1957 and the bridge was demolished sometime in the 1960’s, he added.

According to Estus, funds for the development of the exhibit were donated by the Norwich Lions Club and, thanks to the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers, construction of the exhibit – located in front of the proposed CCHS Research Center adjacent to the museum – is now complete.

Noted railroad author and O&W Railway historian John Taibi will be on hand to give a short presentation on the history, relevance and importance of the old O&W Railway System and, specifically, the Lyon Brook Bridge, originally located in the Town of Oxford.
