OXFORD – A driver attempting to avoid a chunk of falling ice from the back of a tractor trailer swerved into the oncoming lane along State Highway 12 Wednesday and struck a pick-up truck head-on, trapping two people inside the wreckage.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reported Katie Norton, 22, of Greene was traveling south around noon yesterday along Rt. 12 near the intersection of Turner Street in the Town of Oxford.

Police reported a piece of ice dislodged from a tractor trailer traveling just ahead of Norton’s car, causing her to swerve to avoid the falling debris.

Police said Norton’s vehicle then crossed the yellow line and struck a north bound pick-up truck head on.
