NEW BERLIN – Newly-elected Village of New Berlin Mayor Terry Potter was sworn in Monday and one of his first priorities is to address the approaching demolition of a condemned building on Main Street.
County Code Enforcement closed the building in January 2008 after there were complaints of bricks and debris falling from it. The municipality has struggled to find a solution ever since, eventually deciding on demolition due to the reportedly high cost of restoration.
Potter said private contractors interested in demolishing the three-story structure will be participating in a walk-through of the building with engineers this week.
He said the board plans to receive bids for the project by April 19.
“Between the efforts of former mayors Carol Riley, Wade Schrag and Trustee Bob Starr, they’ve really done a lot of cutting red tape and done a fine job in getting things done. It hasn’t been easy,” said Potter.
