Norwich 5, Susquehanna Valley 3
CONKLIN – Norwich produced a season-high 13 hits, and scored two runs in the top of the seventh to break a tie game and win for the second time this season.
Ben Barnes’ sharp grounder to shortstop took a bad hop and bounced into the outfield scoring Brendan McInerney with the go-ahead run. Josh Whaley delivered his second RBI single of the game scoring Mackay Hotaling.
Justin Lindenthaler, who recorded a save in Norwich’s win earlier in the week, came on in relief in the fourth inning to earn his first varsity win. Lindenthaler induced a line-out-and-throw-back-to-first double play to end the game.
“It’s nice that our bats are starting to warm up,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “We’re playing good defense and getting a lot out of our bullpen. This was a nice league win.”
Norwich opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the third. McInerney’s RBI triple scored Nick McCullough with the first run. Colby Griffin and Whaley added RBI singles later in the frame.
Martinson said that eight of Norwich’s nine starters had base hits. McInerney led with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, and Whaley went 2-for-4 with the aforementioned RBIs.
SV tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases, John Columbus delivered a timely two-run single.
