OXFORD – The Oxford American Legion is rallying behind one of its own this weekend, hosting two fundraisers to raise money for Robert Travis.
Know as “Bob” to his friends, Travis suffered a stroke in November which left him paralyzed on his left side. After more than a month at Crouse Irving Hospital in Syracuse, he was transferred to Crown Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Cortland, where he has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation.
According to Bruce Wackford, the situation has caused a financial strain for Travis, who was working on a temporary basis for the Town of Oxford prior to the stroke.
“All he has is his Social Security,” he said, explaining that Travis has already come close to losing his house.
Wackford, who is a friend of Travis’ as well as a fellow Marine Corps veteran, is the driving force behind this weekend’s fundraiser.
