ITHACA – Norwich’s 400-meter relay team posted its best time of the year, and won a boys’ league title at the STAC Championships Thursday at Ithaca.
It was the top performance for the Tornado boys, who are currently in third place in team scoring. Norwich coach Paul Sims said the pole vault was the only event not completed. The meet will finish on Monday, Sims said.
“The only schools that are ahead of us are much bigger, and Vestal is just absolutely loaded,” Sims said.
Norwich is at 46 points, far ahead of the eight it scored last year. The 400-meter relay team of Patrick Taylor, David Layman, Josh Favaloro, and Morgan Crawford timed a season-best 44.81. Crawford, running anchor, had the lead and maintained the advantage over the final 100 meters.
The 1,600-meter relay team finished a half stride out of first place timing an unofficial 3:30, Sims said. David Jones, Nate Ashton, Max Morse, and Matt Murray made up the second-place quartet.
Murray was third in the 400 meters and Taylor took third in the long jump to complete Norwich’s top-three finishes.
Cleo Daoud led Norwich’s girls with fifth-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
Norwich competes in the Section IV Class B meet next Thursday at Windsor.
