Looking for something fun to do with the kids this Saturday? Come enjoy the weather and support local agriculture at Dairy Day, at the Chenango County Fairgrounds!

The day kicks off with a parade at 11 a.m., from the Tops parking lot on East Main Street in Norwich proceeding down to the fairgrounds, where a number of free events will take place.

Dairy Day is a day to make important connections between what we eat and where it comes from, said Bradd Vickers, president of Chenango County Farm Bureau.

“It’s important to make connections and educate the consumer on what their local industry does in Chenango County,” Vickers said. “This gives them the opportunity to talk to producers directly.”

Vickers said the Farm Bureau, the largest agricultural organization in Chenango County and New York State, will have several displays, including one about the many uses of dairy cows. There will also be a virtual tour of a dairy farm and opportunities to win prizes.

Reed Baker of Baker’s Maple said Dairy Day is a great way to show support for local dairy and agriculture.

The Baker’s Maple exhibit will include their wide range of products, including maple sugar and syrup.

“There’s a lot going on so the biggest thing I’m looking forward to is getting through the day in one piece,” Baker joked.

Children may also enjoy the petting zoo and a kids’ tractor pull.

New to this year’s event is a stock tub race. Local teams with three to five members created vehicles to race against a stock tub.

Leatherstocking Veterinary Services will also have a fistulated cow on display, courtesy of SUNY Morrisville. Visitors can reach into the cow and feel the rumen, the largest part of the cow’s stomach, learn about what it eats and how it digests.

As always, there will be plenty of free milk to give away!

Dairy Day organizers welcome community members and their families to come out and enjoy the day.
