SOUTH NEW BERLIN – The Chenango County Fire Chief’s Association is inviting the public to come out this weekend and show support for the county’s volunteer firefighters and emergency responders at the second annual Firefighter’s Fund Day.
The event will take place Saturday at the South New Berlin Fire Station, 3327 State Hwy 8.
“Even though it’s in South New Berlin, it benefits every department member in the county,” said Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo, who serves as president of the CCFCA.
According to Chawgo, proceeds from the event will benefit the organization’s Firefighter’s Fund. The fund was created last year and is designed to help firefighters and their families during their time of need. Through the fund, the chief’s association will both provide seed money to departments to enable them to host fundraisers, as well as give direct grants to individual members who find themselves in the midst of crisis.
Chawgo describes the fund as “firefighters helping firefighters.”
“We do a really good job of taking care of people in our community,” he explained. “We want to make sure we’re helping each other as well.”
The day-long event will include a number of activities sponsored by different departments, all of whom have come together for the cause.
