NORWICH – The Chenango County Treasurer’s Office announced last week that the 2011 tax sale has made a net surplus of $233,987 with only 13 delinquent properties forfeited or not receiving a bid. The remaining parcels of land will be available for re-bid in September.

“It’s gone very smoothly,” said Second Deputy Treasurer Barbara Strier. She said the property sale has done well compared to previous years and she believes most of the remaining parcels of land will be purchased in the next round of bidding.

“At least two of the parcels have bordering land owners who are interested,” she said. “And people have expressed interest in most of the rest.”

Properties that are delinquent on taxes for three years are put up for auction in order to cover the cost of the back taxes, interest and penalties. The properties were in arrears in 2011 for a total of $421,732 for taxes, penalties and interest. Initially, 57 properties out of 65 received bids, with five properties forfeiting their bids and eight properties receiving no bids.
