Norwich 101, Chenango Forks 84

CHENANGO FORKS – The extra numbers and depth paid off for Norwich, who won at Chenango Forks Friday night for the first time in head coach Amanda Downey’s tenure.

With the meet’s result still hanging in the balance, Norwich finished one-two in the closing 400-meter freestyle relay to capture 12 of 14 possible team points. “I really didn’t know what (Chenango Forks) had left going to the last event, and I knew they still had some strong swimmers left,” Downey said. “Anything could have happened in the last event, I just wanted (my team) to finish strong.”

In addition to winning the last relay, Norwich’s Rachel Zieno (200 freestyle), Erin Gawronski (500 freestyle), and Shannon Curley (100 breaststroke) captured victories. Norwich was especially dominant in the longer freestyle races, Downey said. “It definitely helped having the depth, it made a huge difference in this meet,” Downey said. “It was a big win, and the girls swam really well for their first meet of the season.”

Norwich is at Chenango Valley Friday.
